THE CITY OF INNSBRUCK
Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol (one of Austria’s nine federal states) in the west of Austria with a population of 130 000. Innsbruck is one of the most beautiful cities in the Alps. The name “Innsbruck” means bridge over the Inn.
Innsbruck Inn Valley, Hofburg, Innsbruck Cathedral
The city is located in the Inn Valley, 574 meters above sea level and is surrounded by magnificent alpine mountains (the “Nordkette” - Northern Chain in the north and the “Patscherkofel” in the south), which are over 2 000 meters high. Innsbruck is internationally renowned as a winter sports centre: In 1964 and 1976, the city hosted the Winter Olympics; in 1984 the Winter Paralympics; and in 2012 the Winter Youth Olympics.
Innsbruck old town , Innsbruck Maria-Theresien-Straße, Innsbruck summer
Innsbruck boasts a medieval old town with wonderful small alleys, arcades and one of the city’s most famous landmarks, the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl). The city’s historical architecture is harmoniously complemented with innovative modern architecture. Innsbruck’s location as a bridge between north and south, east and west as well as its importance as a university city over the centuries gives the city its political and cultural significance.

A Short History
The area has been populated continuously beginning with initial inhabitation in the Early Stone Age. In the 4th century, the Romans built the army station Veldidena (today’s urban district Wilten). In 1429, Innsbruck became the capital of Tyrol as well as a political and cultural centre. In the 1490s, Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519) resided in the city. He and his wife Bianca Maria Sforza used to watch festivals, tournaments and other events from the balcony of the Golden Roof, which was built to mark their wedding. As a memorial to Emperor Maximilian, Emperor Ferdinand I (1503-1564) had built the Hofkirche (Court Church) with a cenotaph and bronze statues of the emperor’s ancestors. Up to 1665 various lines of the Habsburgs ruled in Innsbruck with an independent court. In 1669, the university was founded. Until 1918, Innsbruck was part of the Austrian monarchy followed by the First and later on the Second Republic of Austria.
